Citrus Valley's Wind Ensemble Takes On Long BeachBy LAURYN BEST
On Friday April 7, the Citrus Valley High School Wind Ensemble took a trip to Cal State Long Beach for a clinic at the Bob Cole Conservatory with Mr. John Carnahan. A band clinic is essentially a meeting with a music director not affiliated with another program to provide new insight or critique on their playing. In this case, Mr. Carnahan helped the Wind Ensemble with some of the pieces they were preparing with for their annual spring concert coming up in May. The band arrived at the Bob Cole Conservatory of music around 9:30 and took some time to look around the campus before gathering together about an hour later in the band room. Mr. Carnahan started with allowing Mr. Austin Meiners, Citrus Valley’s band director, to lead the band as usual and interrupted when he found something that could be improved upon. He made sure to engage with the group and made it a point to give a piece of advice to every player by the end of the rehearsal. First chair flute player, Dante Dullas, was one of the many students who benefitted from this method. When asked what he learned he commented on how Mr. Carnahan showed him that “simple things like adjusting the angle at which you concentrate your air stream can make a tremendous difference in the way you sound.” Mr. Meiners stated he believed trips like this benefit students because “it’s very valuable for them to see the university lifestyle, and see the next step whether they want to go into a music program or not.” Grant Goodman, a senior who will be attending the University of the Pacific’s music conservatory in the fall, admitted he is “most looking forward to the environment of serious musicians, both students and professors”. The band’s trip was not all work though. After the clinic they had lunch and then proceeded to split in two groups and take a tour of the campus. They left Cal State Long Beach around 2:00 and took a trip to the Museum of Latin American Art which was founded by Dr. Robert Gumbiner in 1996. The group looked like they had a fun time walking around the museum and admiring the mixed media art forms. Mr. Meiners then surprised the students with a quick trip to a nearby beach where they took pictures with each other and tried not get too much sand in their shoes. For their final stop the band regrouped and had dinner at El Torito, a kind of a staple for the Citrus Valley Band program. All in all, it was a very successful trip. REV Winter Guard Goes to WorldBy SAVANNA PATINO
On Wednesday April 5, 2017, Redlands East Valley High School’s Varsity Winter Guard team woke up at 2 am and got on a plane to Dayton, Ohio. The team traveled to compete in Winter Guard International (WGI) World Championships. Winter Guard is an athletic/performance activity that has been coined as the “sport of the arts.” Teams perform in arenas and basketball courts, spinning flag, rifle, and sabre, while utilizing dance techniques and emotion. Winter Guard teams, both high school and independent, travel from all over the world to compete, showcase their talents, and come together with thousands of other people who enjoy the same activity. This year, REV’s Varsity team had the opportunity to compete in the preliminary round against 120 other teams in their division and watch world class teams compete in finals. The team prepared the trip for almost two years and was able to take part in WGI’s 40th year anniversary celebration. Although the team did not make it to semifinals (only the top 60 guards made it), the team was able to watch the other guards and learn from other teams from around the world. The trip was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. |

California Thespian State Festival occurred March 31- April 2 and Citrus Valley’s Thespian troupe 7716 was immensely successful in the competitions. The students, with help of Ms. Elena Villa, set up their own performances to compete with at the festival in different categories. Here are just a few of the many fantastic achievements: The group was very respectful in everything they did and hotel staff believed they were in college. Senior Raphael Berglas received 1st place in Monologue and a Senior Scholarship. Sophomores Jackson Bottorff, Kobe Darby, and Daniel Hernandez won 2nd place in group acting. Seniors Denali Linton, Raphael Berglas, Charisma Garcia, and D’Angelo Parks placed 3rd in Scenefest, a competition of 10 minute play performances. Junior Emma Loney was chosen to be an Assistant Stage Manager for the All State Show, which D’Angelo Parks assistant directed and Sophomore Kelsey Cauldren performed in. Citrus Valley is so proud of their troupe, and we hope the best for their future. Redlands East Valley’s troupe also attended the festival. Senior Katie Hayes said, “for REV, festival is just about being understood and surrounding ourselves with other people who understand us.” One of their sophomores also got a callback, meaning she is in the top 15% in the country. Most of these participants qualify to compete in International Thespian Festival over the summer, and they are all very excited to participate. |

Your Name Makes an Impact on Foreign AudiencesBy TIM LEE
Kimi No Na Wa., known in English as Your Name., is one of the top trending anime movies ever released. It first premiered at 2016 Anime Expo in Los Angeles, then released in Japan, and finally it eventually made its way back to the United States on April 7th, where it has been shown in many theaters including Harkins at Mountain Grove. The film has gotten top ratings with a whopping 9.3/10 on MyAnimeList, 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, and an 8.6/10 on IMDb. This places it on top of some of the biggest anime titans of all time: Full Metal Alchemist, Naruto, and many more. The storyline of the movie follows a girl living in rural Japan in a small city called Itomori and a boy living in the city of Tokyo. The girl, Mitsuha Miyamizu, is bound by formal traditions as she is part of her family’s shrine. She wishes that she was a handsome boy living in Tokyo. Her wish comes true as she then switches bodies every other day with the male protagonist of the story, Taki Tachibana. The switch occurs sometime during the night and is realized when the characters wake up the next morning. The storyline revolves around fate and how all events are related, and progresses through each character’s struggle as they search for one another. Overall, the movie was fantastic. The plot was very original and was portrayed in a unique way that opened the audience to different cultures and lifestyles in Japan. The studios that animated the movie: Kadokawa Shoten, Toho, and many others were extremely detailed and created scenes of breathtaking beauty. The visuals were accompanied by soundtracks from Japanese rock band RADWIMPS, who produced amazing pieces for the movie. The movie is an emotional rollercoaster and had all the themes and elements that a good movie should have; it’s no surprise that it has already grossed over $330 million USD since it’s release. |

BY JESSICA LOPEZ
13 Reasons Why is a teen novel written by Jay Asher which deals with drug and alcohol abuse, rape, and suicide. Not only is this a book, but it has recently been turned into a show on Netflix and has been talked about among teens and adults for several weeks now. Both the show and the book are about 12 high school students that try to puzzle together why their classmate Hannah Baker took her own life. Before she made the tragic decision, she recorded thirteen tapes on the reasons why. 12 classmates receive audio tapes from Hannah after her death explaining their involvement in her decision it is from their perspective that is based. The first tape starts off with the most iconic line, “Hey it’s Hannah. Hannah Baker...” The person listening is shocked to be hearing a dead girl's voice. On these tapes she talks about rape, sexual harassment, and rumors that changed her high school experience forever. All the students in the tapes are blamed for Hannah’s decision except for Clay Jensen. Clay Jensen is a 17 year old who was great friends with Hannah, but also fell in love with her. In Clay’s tape, Hannah explains how he isn’t like the others. “I cost a girl her life because I was afraid to love her.” Clay never believed the rumors. He was the only one that truly cared for her feelings besides her parents. 13 Reasons Why is a TV MA rating on Netflix for explicit language, sexual activity, and graphic violence. The show also has a five star rating but is it for the right reason? Many say the show glorifies suicide as a gate way to solve your problems, while others believe it showcases perfectly what can actually go through a person’s mind if they are feeling in any way like ... |
