Track and Field: The Universal Sport By MIA DELMONICO and CAITLIN MILLER
Track and field provides an opportunity for athletes of a variety of sports to come together and form a versatile group of individuals and eventually a team. Athletes from all sports gather and get the chance to excel individually in specific areas of competition. This characteristic of track and field is one of the main reasons it attracts so many different types of competitors. Being given the choice of what distance to run, what jumps to perform, and what throwing events to complete gives the team members a sense of freedom and individuality that other team sports do not. Track and field is a universal sport that allows both new athletes to aspire and experienced competitors to improve. One of the most influential things that draws different people to this sport is the fact that several different talents are enhanced and shown. There are opportunities for people to do sprints, long distance, middle distance, relays, and hurdles. This shows different athletes’ abilities to accelerate and collaborate, as well as amplifying their endurance levels. There are also field events that offer others a chance to participate in the sport. These include shot put, discus throw, high jump, triple jump, and long jump. Athletes train daily to improve their skills in each specific event. Another great aspect of track and field is that each and every participant is able to engage in running events as well as field events. This requires extra commitment seeing as though they must attend more than one practice a day. Being in track and field requires having a flexible attitude and a willingness to help the team in any way possible. Track and field does stand apart from other sports in the sense that they give everyone a chance to participate. The coaches of track and field will not turn anyone away and they will work their hardest to help each athlete excel individually. They also take the polished pieces the athletes use in their first sports and use them to enhance their performances as well as working on the missing pieces to complete the picture in the end. The hope always is that the picture will portray success. This dedication makes each participant feel like they are contributing positively to the team and the results of each meet... |

Formula 1 Races OnPhotos by MICAELA PENALOZA
By DAVID MIKHAIL
It's that time of the year again when the Formula 1, which is the highest class of single-seat auto racing that is sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, season comes upon us. However, this season is not quite like those who came before it: not all the cars look the same. This year, thanks to different rules and regulations, the shark fin, which diverts turbulent air from the rear wingand dates back to 2008 when Red Bull first introduced it on their RB4, especially while cornering, is back and it has already proved its worth after it led Ferrari’s prancing horse, driven by Sebastien Vettel to avoid the view of hamilton's car rear end, who came in second place, at Melbourn and speed to victory with a, truly astonishing, 9.975 seconds to spare and winning first place for Ferrari. This number becomes even more impressive after you keep in mind that Vettel had 7 more pit stops than Hamilton, 25 compared to Hamilton's 18, this just testifies to Ferrari's great engineering, also hats off to Ferrari's pit crew. Another big change this year is that Mercedes had a new driver, Valtteri Bottas, to replace Nico Rosberg, former world champion. However, Bottas shows great promise after he came in third place. Unfortunately, however, Mclaren, who once dominated, do not look like they will be putting on a show this year seeing that the reliability problems they suffered from last season move on to this one and continue to haunt them this season, that's a shame. |
CVHS Tennis vs EisenhowerREV Badminton Loses to RHSBy TIMOTHY LEE
On Mon., March 27th, Redlands East Valley High School’s Co-Ed Badminton team faced off against Redlands High School in one of two rival matchups of the season. The REV students were excused from class at 1:30 in order to board the bus and travel to RHS. They arrived early and were given an opportunity to warm up before the match started. Once the RHS team was completely present, the players were seated and coaches clarified the rules and regulations while letting players know who they would be facing and what court they would be playing on. The match started off with a mixed doubles win for REV from Hannah Washburn and Matthew Mikhailov, and a loss for REV from Justin Lee and Alexus Rauch. From there on, the rest of the games were played at different times with a large amount of spectators crammed into the RHS gym, all watching different games. RHS ended up winning with a total of 14 won matches to REV’s 7 won matches. They will play again later on in the season at REV, and REV looks to imitate the last season record by winning the home matchup in order to have one win and one loss against RHS before playoffs. |
