REV's Sergio Hipolito Commits to HiloBy MICAELA PENALOZA
Redlands East Valley soccer player Sergio Hipolito committed to University of Hawaii at Hilo with a full ride scholarship. Sergio is also known as Checkito or Checko from many family members and friends. He has been playing soccer with his grandpa’s team since the age of five. Sergio has been playing soccer at REV since freshman year and was put on the varsity team from his sophomore year all the way to his senior year. Sergio states that his family, and his parents especially, have been his biggest supporters throughout his soccer career since he was a young boy. His dream was always to have been able to play on a division one or two soccer team, and being in Hawaii is a nice bonus to him. He feels like it's a dream come true that he gets to commit to a school where he can play soccer and get an education all in one. Sergio exclaims "I'm most excited about going to Hilo and getting ready for the season." Sergio Hipolito will be the third Redlands East Valley soccer athlete to have gone to school at Hilo. |

CVHS Boys Soccer Wins Thriller to Advance to CIFBy TONY MAURICIO
On Feb.28, the Citrus Valley Blackhawks went up against the Saddleback Roadrunners in the semi-finals; both teams attempting to make their run for the championship game. Both schools were stuck playing a defensive game, as neither team would give up a goal which led to a 0-0 tie at the half. As the second half came around, defense was still playing a key role in the game as it wasn’t until the 9 minute mark when #7 Elias Mejia scored, making the game 1-0 in favor of the Blackhawks. Citrus Valley looked like they had the momentum to carry them to a championship game, but that came to a screeching halt when #24 from Saddleback scored the game tying goal to send the game into overtime. When overtime came around, both teams stepped up their intensity which then then led to double overtime. In double overtime, both teams made terrific plays on the defensive and offensive side to keep their momentum going, and after the double overtime, the game went to penalty kicks. During the PK period each team is allowed 5 shots to determine the winner of the game, and in that period Citrus Valley made all five of their shots; Saddleback only made four which resulted in Citrus Valley winning the game and moving on to play El Dorado in the CIF championship game. |
