Teal is the New OrangeBy DOMINIC RIOS
The Teal Pumpkin Project by Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE) is to help raise food allergy awareness. One in every thirteen children have food allergies, so they are usually left out of the trick-or-treat fun since most candy is off limits. There are ways though to make trick-or-treating inclusive for those children who have food allergies. What you can do is give out non-food goodies like glow sticks, bracelets, or necklaces, pencils, pens, crayons, markers, bubbles, Halloween erasers, pencil toppers, mini slinkies, whistles, kazoos, noisemakers, bouncy balls, etc. To notify the kids that you have these goodies you just put a teal pumpkin on your front door. If you participate in the teal pumpkin project you can still have candy but just keep them separated from the non-food items. The teal pumpkin project was started three years ago to try and allow all children to enjoy the fun of Halloween even if they have food allergies. You can join the other thousands of families participating to make Halloween fun for all children. For more information visit www.tealpumpkinproject.org Share this with family friends, as someone you know may have food allergies and not be able to participate in these activities. Anyone can help all children have fun and enjoy the Halloween holiday. |
The Rise and Fall of Ken BoneBy LAURYN BEST
Ken Bone earned his place in the meme hall of fame on October 9th during the second presidential debate in St.Louis Missouri. Because it was carried out town hall style, people seated on the floor were able to ask the candidates questions personally. Mr.Bone couldn’t have been aware that his striking resemblance to a cartoon character from Toy Story would launch him from obscurity to short-term stardom, but just like the old adage warns: all good things must come to an end. Everyone teen has had an adult tell them once or twice to be careful of what they post on the internet as it can never be taken down. As fans like to do, Ken Bone’s fans decided to look a bit into his presence on the internet (particularly Reddit) and were not very pleased with what they found. The shooting of Trayvon Martin is still a very sensitive topic for many and is credited as the starting point of the Black Lives Matter movement, but Bone has a different view on the issue than some of his followers. He is credited to have described George Zimmerman’s shooting of the seventeen year old ‘justified’ on a past post on Reddit under the username StanGibson18. He then goes on to call Zimmerman by explicit nouns offending both supporters and opponents. Bone weighed in on multiple other controversial moral and political topics. He also admitted to committing insurance fraud in the past so he wouldn’t lose his job... |

Mental Illness Awareness Week, on Oct. 2 - Oct. 8, was established in 1990 by the U.S. Congress in recognition of National Alliance of Mental Illness’ (NAMI) efforts to help raise consciousness and fight the destructive stigmas that come along with mental illnesses. When one in five adults as well as young teens aged 13-18 suffer from some form of mental illness, it has been deemed an important cause by mental health organizations, especially given the stigmatized treatment that many people who suffer from mental illnesses receive. The event, which NAMI promotes and organizes annually, is a catalyst for change and a cause for mental health advocates across the country. This year, organizations like NAMI and Each Mind Matters, as well as many more, spread knowledge and coordinated events to raise money for their cause. People were encouraged to post with the hashtag #EachMindMatters, and to tie lime green, Mental Illness Awareness Week’s color, ribbons around their communities “I think we believe that so much of mental health disorders or problems we face in life have a lot of shame,” said Jennifer Maerz, the editor for a new magazine devoted to mental health... |

Southern California hasn’t seen a storm any time recently, but the east coast of the United States has been hit hard by Hurricane Matthew. It formed near the Windward Islands on Sept. 28, 2016. As timed passed, the tropical storm increased winds to become a hurricane; enough power to become a Category 5, the strongest ranked hurricane in the Atlantic since Hurricane Felix in 2007. The path of the hurricane started in the Caribbean Sea, then followed up north of the United States, to end in North Carolina. Hurricane Matthew made its first landfall on eastern Cuba and Haiti on Oct. 4, 2016. The storm trailed through the Bahamas to make another landfall again on Florida on Oct. 6, 2016. Leaving a trail of heavy downpour and winds up to 107 mph, the storm went north to trail off back to the Atlantic in North Carolina. Even though the storm decreased categories as it went up the east coast, the damage it caused will cost at least 10 billion dollars for United States. The heavy rains caused flooding in most areas with the highest being 17.5 inches of rain. Dams and rivers were overflowing at high records. Streets went under water as houses... |

The 2016 Nobel Peace Prize, given out by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, was awarded to Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos. President Santos has been actively trying to end the civil war that has been going on for 50 years in Colombia between government military forces and the FARC, the oldest group of Columbia’s left- wing rebels, guerrilla forces. The Nobel Peace Prize, created by Alfred Nobel, is awarded annually to individuals who have made the most significant progress towards the abolishment of standing armies and the promotion of holding the peace. It is awarded by a five-member committee, which is elected by the Parliament of Norway. It was first awarded on December 10th, 1901 in Olso, Norway and has been awarded 97 times over the course of 114 years. Although the prize is awarded for recent efforts and is often seen as a way to encourage future efforts towards peace, it is often criticized by those who deem that it is based off of opinion and tends to be erroneous... |

There is much controversy with this year’s presidential election. Yet again, on Oct. 19, Trump and Clinton attempted to win the preference of the American people in the third and final debate. The debate was held at the Thomas and Mack Center, University of Nevada in Las Vegas and moderated by Fox news anchor, Chris Wallace. www.ethic-news.org/news-articles/third-debate-is-foundation-for-the-next-us-presidentThe debate started out with both candidates questioned on how to interpret the U.S Constitution. Both candidates expressed their respect for their country and for their hosts holding the debate and went on to answer the question, all the while throwing in facts regarding their overall platform. The overlook on their beliefs showed their complete opposition in many areas such as abortion and foreign policy and their slightly different beliefs such as with the Affordable Healthcare Act (Obama Care)... |
