REV and Citrus Female Athletes attend Women in Sports SymposiumBy EMILY SIBLEY
Twenty female athletes from both Redlands East Valley and Citrus Valley attended the 8th Annual Women in Sports Symposium at the Fox Theater in Riverside, where 4 key speakers covered a wide range of topics pertaining to sports: from learning about how to develop leadership skills that can be incorporated into their sports to inspirational experiences to inspire young women to make an impact in both their sports and their community. Coaches from both REV and CV chose 10 female athletes, from freshman to juniors, who are upcoming influences in their sport. Speakers included Dr. Judy White, University of Redlands’ Women’s Lacrosse coach, Suzette Sobodi, University of Riverside’s Softball coach, Nikki Palmer, and the first female City Manager of Moreno Valley, Michelle Dawson. After each session, students were free to ask questions to each speaker. Dr. Judy White explained her personal struggles growing up in an abusive household, and how her drive and positive mental attitude led to her current success. Suzette Sobodi talked about her three B’s which were to Be Brave, Be Persistent, and Be Resilient, and also about how she values grit to be an important key to success. Girls were also able to learn about what college recruiters look for in an athlete and about the pros and cons of all types of colleges. Finally, Michelle Dawson used her personal story of getting better at running to explain her success and drive that have led her to be a trendsetter and trailblazer. Students from both schools were inspired in their own ways by the conference. Erin Robles, a junior cross country/track runner from REV, said “I went home and felt very empowered by the ladies’ words and guidance, but also reassured in my sports and priorities. I appreciated the insight on college recruitment and how sports in college works alongside academics... |

REV Boy's Soccer Plows Through Centennial HighBy DIDI MALVEAUX
The Redlands East Valley’s Varsity Boy’s soccer team had a very successful season in this year’s CBL. With the boys’ victory from their last game against Citrus Valley High School they were able to solidify their number 1 rating in CBL making them 13-0-1 and advancing them to the CIF rounds. The boys have an exceptional amount of pressure coming off as last year’s champions and for the seniors on the team: they wish to continue their winning streak all the way until the end, in which they will receive another championship ring. Hours before the game on Thursday Feb. 16, the boys had time to reflect on their situation and evaluate their chances of another successful CIF championship. Rene Gonzales, goalkeeper, had this to say before the game “The team we will be playing against tonight is a really great team they have many strengths and skills on the field, however I have faith in my team and their set of skills as well, as long as we can keep a level head and stick to our game plan, I believe we can make another wildcat victory.” The crowd could feel the thickness in the air, the energy of both teams in the stands, the drive and the determination in order to win and to continue on in the tournament. CVHS Girl's Soccer Ends Their SeasonBy ARIEL LOPEZ
The 2017 soccer season has been a whirlwind of emotions for the soccer girls. Due to their recent loss (3-0), at Quartz Hills High School, they will not be moving forward. As the varsity captains look back on the season they are happy to have spent their last season on the field with such a tight-knit group of girls. While they are devastated with the recent loss, they are happy to have so many memories with each other. Captain Natalie Barret believes that this has been “One of [their] stronger seasons” and if they keep the same tradition of “Working hard [while also] having fun” they will keep moving forward with many wins. The senior varsity girls hope to leave behind the mentality of teamwork along with their love for soccer. Varsity Captain Savannah Giles hopes that the next team understands that everyone has their own set of skills and abilities but the most important thing is to learn how to bring them together and work as a team. Even though these girls will miss all the pasta feeds, rival school games, and fun practices, they are happy to to be on this team and to have spent their time with so many girls they consider family ...
